Description of the PMC Service
Area
The area served by the Elsberry
Plant Materials Center has a humid climate with precipitation ranging from 20 inches in the
northwest regions to 50 inches in the southeast regions. Precipitation is
unevenly distributed throughout the year with major portions received during the
growing season. The average yearly high temperature for the region is 60-70
degrees F. The average low temperature is 35-50 degrees F. Topography of the
area
served by the Elsberry PMC includes glacial till prairies, Mississippi valley
loess hills, Iowa and Mississippi deep loess heavy till plains, thin loess hills
and plains, Mississippi valley slopes, and the Ozark highlands.
Major land uses include corn, soybeans, cattle, and hog farming. The primary
conservation problems in the service area relate to soil erosion and water
quality. They include: cropland erosion; low forage production; shoreline/streambank
erosion; point sources of pollution from concentrated animal by-products,
stormwater run-off and waste water; wetland loss; and non-point pollution
sources from agricultural lands.
Getting to the Elsberry PMC
The Elsberry PMC is located
in eastern-central Missouri, about 40 miles northeast of St. Louis. The PMC
is just south of the town of Elsberry on Rte. 79.
