Description of the PMC Service
Area
Louisiana is losing approximately 25 square miles of coastal wetlands
annually. Land loss occurs both as marginal erosion and as interior marsh
deterioration. Causes of this wetland loss have been variously attributed to the
loss of sediment
delivery to marshes caused by navigation and flood controls on the Mississippi
River, salt water intrusion into previously fresh and brackish coastal marshes,
dredge and fill activities association with the exploitation of the area’s
mineral resources, and natural geological subsidence. Current efforts are to
develop plants and procedures to reverse the loss of coastal wetlands in
Louisiana, Texas, and Mississippi.
