Description of the PMC Service
Area
The
Aberdeen Plant Materials Center is located in the middle to upper Snake River
plain in southeastern Idaho. The service area topography includes plains to
mountains, with elevations ranging from 1,700 to 12,000 feet. The climate is
continental, changes rapidly with elevation, and is characterized as cold with
wet winters and dry summers. Summers have cool nights and warm days. Most
precipitation occurs as winter snow and spring rain. Total precipitation varies
from less than seven to more than 30 inches annually. The PMC serves portions of
13 Major Land Resource Areas and Plant Hardiness Zones 3 - 7.
Land use is diversified, including vast acreage of native and reseeded
rangelands; extensive irrigated farmland under intensive cropping systems;
non-irrigated cropland primarily in cereal production; large acreage of mountain
meadow and forestlands; and an increasing number of acres devoted to
urbanization, recreational farms and playgrounds, wildlife refuges, hunting
areas, and mining. Extensive cropland areas are severely eroded by wind and
water and extensive rangelands areas are in poor ecological condition.
