Description of the PMC Service
Area
The wide range in topography, age, climatic factors, and vegetation has
resulted in a diverse and unique area that is served by the James E. “Bud”
Smith City Plant Materials Center.
Rainfall varies from 40 inches in the northeast to less than 8 inches in the far
west. Seasonal patterns are established, but frequent droughts and major storms
of high intensity are common. Seventy-five percent of the precipitation is
received from March to October. The growing season is 280 days in the south part
of the area and 179 days in the most northern part of the area.
Principle conservation problems in the area include controlling wind erosion and
water erosion, and soil protection, restoring saline areas to productive use,
improving wildlife habitat stabilization of critically eroding areas, and
improving the quality of rangeland and pastureland.
