Description of the PMC Service Area
The area served by the
Kika de la Garza Plant Materials Center (PMC) comprises about 27 million acres of the southern
portion of Texas. Average annual precipitation ranges from 17 inches in the
western areas to more than 40 inches along the coast. Average annual
temperatures range from 68 degrees to 74 degrees Fahrenheit. The average growing
season ranges from 260 days in northern areas to 330 days in the lower Rio
Grande Valley. Topography is flat to rolling with extremely variable soils.
The major land uses in south Texas are rangeland, pasture, and hay land. These
land uses support the production of beef cattle and high quality white-tail
deer. Cropland is locally scattered through the south Texas region. Its heaviest
concentration is in the lower Rio Grande Valley where irrigated citrus and
vegetables are grown. Along the Gulf Coast Prairie where precipitation is enough
to support annual crops, cotton and grain sorghum are grown. The Texas Gulf
Coast is also an internationally significant migration and wintering habitat for
North American water fowl. Strip mining areas, oil field exploration, and
coastline urbanization are also land uses that require conservation plant
development.
